LEGO SMART Play is the latest innovation from the LEGO Group, officially unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas as one of the brand’s most significant developments in decades. Designed to bring physical LEGO creations to life, SMART Play blends iconic brick building with interactive technology—without screens or mobile apps—creating a responsive play experience that reacts to how children engage with their sets.
At the heart of this platform is the LEGO Smart Brick—a standard 2×4 LEGO brick that hides a tiny custom chip, sensors, a speaker, and communication hardware that together power the interactive system.
How Smart Bricks Work
The LEGO Smart Brick closely resembles a regular plastic LEGO piece, but inside it contains advanced technology that can:
- Sense motion and orientation using accelerometers and light sensors.
- Produce real-time sounds and light effects that correspond to how the build is handled.
- Interact with other Smart Bricks, Smart Minifigures, and Smart Tags via a new wireless protocol called BrickNet—all without needing an app or external controller.
- Charge wirelessly on a dedicated pad, with LEGO claiming long-lasting battery life even after periods of inactivity.
Smart Tags are small tiles encoded with digital IDs that tell the Smart Brick what role a specific element should play (for example, spaceship engines or character actions), while Smart Minifigures carry unique IDs that enable character-specific responses within a build.
Interactive Play Without Screens
A defining feature of LEGO SMART Play is its screen-free approach. Unlike many modern toys that rely on apps or digital interfaces, LEGO’s system delivers interactive experiences through physical play alone. When a Smart Brick detects movement, distance, gestures, or specific Smart Tags, it responds with context-sensitive sounds and lights that encourage hands-on creativity and storytelling.
According to LEGO, the Smart Brick’s audio is generated in real time rather than replayed from static clips, adding richness and responsiveness to the interaction.
Launch & First Sets (March 2026)
LEGO SMART Play is set to roll out on March 1, 2026, starting with a series of Star Wars-themed sets that are the first to incorporate the new technology. These “All-In-One” SMART Play sets include everything needed for the interactive experience—Smart Bricks, Smart Minifigures, Smart Tags, and build elements designed for immersive play.
The initial collection includes:
- SMART Play: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter
- SMART Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing
- SMART Play: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing
Pre-orders for these sets begin in early January 2026 in select markets, with wide availability planned from March 1.
Why LEGO SMART Play Matters
LEGO SMART Play represents a notable leap forward in hands-on interactive play. By integrating responsive technology directly into the bricks and minifigures that fans already know, LEGO is reimagining classic play patterns without turning to screens, encouraging imagination and physical engagement.
LEGO describes the introduction of Smart Play as one of the most important evolutions in its product lineup since the introduction of the LEGO Minifigure in 1978, underscoring the company’s confidence in this new direction.
Looking Ahead
While the first wave of SMART Play sets centers on Star Wars, LEGO’s announcement hints at broader expansion in the future, potentially bringing this interactive system to additional themes and building experiences. As the technology evolves, SMART Play could significantly influence how millions of builders combine creativity with responsive play.
